Light Design

I took the score of John Cage's Imaginary landscape IV (for 42 records) and expanded the duration to 60 minutes while keeping the proportions of crescendos and decrescendos. I then randomly picked 42 spots and assigned them to each one of the records in the score. A music score turned into a light score.

Light gently grew in the least expected places, very slowly. Sometimes pointing down and bouncing off the floor, sometimes pointing up and revealing the iron skeleton of the empty stage. Occasionally one light grows too strong and the whole audience is blinded for a good five minutes. And then, very slowly, it dies and darkness clings on to everything again.

Present productions of this show keep the same light environment but there are options to cut down on the amount of equipment required. There are several versions depending on the amount of equipment I can get my hands on and the set-up time available. One uses 42 candles, another one uses torches, a third one uses domestic lamps, another one uses Christmas lights and a last version combines all the previous and some more.
