Pre-recorded
music
A recording of John Cage's
Litany
for the Whale for two voices (me singing both parts), mixed with whale
songs is played quietly as the audience comes in. The distant wailing of the
whales and the two voices kneading a melody can be heard throughout the performance,
when all else is quiet.
On 5 occasions, 5 different
versions of John Cage's Imaginary
Landscape IV for 42 Records is played. These versions were mixed by
me in 1997: a large number of records was divided into 4 groups: Western Contemporary
recordings, Jazz and pop music, Non-Western music (or world music, if you
don't mind the term), old records I used to listen to when I was a kid. I
used the previous 4 versions as the source material for the 5th version.
